Holidays in Florida

Report Date: December 31, 2007

December in Florida has been unusually warm and the bones have responded nicely. Several fish in the 8-10 lb range were caught around the Christmas holidays. A really big suprise was a huge permit of about 35 lbs was caught by Dave Raese on a live shrimp/jig not 1/4 mile from the boat ramp. It took Dave about 45 minutes and a lot of running fore and aft on the boat. There are lots of 100lb+ tarpon over at South Beach and Government Cut and we do fish them as wind conditions permit. The channels south of Stiltsville has been fishing really well lately. They are yielding pompano, jacks, spanish mackerel, bluefish, ladyfish, and grouper. Sharks are present and can be targeted. We even hooked a tarpon in the middle of all those fish today. That's a first for me in the winter. Solid rod bending action on light tackle or fly. On Sunday we had several shot's at some large permit we found doing the "float" thing, but they wouldn't eat the fly and spooked. I would like to wish all my clients and friends a happy and healty New Year.
